Pacquiao-Mayweather - Blood remains issue

3:33 PM, Posted by eilrach, No Comment

By TIM DAHLBERG (AP) – 1 hour ago

LAS VEGAS — Manny Pacquiao has always been willing to spill blood to win a fight. He's not nearly as eager to give blood to get a fight.

The fate of Pacquiao's planned March 13 megafight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. hangs in the balance. Both sides traded jabs Wednesday over Mayweather's insistence that the two submit to Olympic-style drug testing amid indications that both were open to a possible compromise.

With time running short, though, Pacquiao's promoter said he's not willing to negotiate much longer to make the fight.

"I think it's over tomorrow and we're going to another opponent if there is no agreement," promoter Bob Arum said. "It looks to me like they want a way out of the fight. Mayweather doesn't want to take a chance of losing."

A day after Mayweather's camp threatened to scuttle the fight unless the boxers were subject to random blood tests, Arum said his fighter would agree to just three blood tests. One would be done in January during the week the fight is formally announced, a second would be done no later than 30 days before the fight, and a final test would be done in the locker room afterward.

Arum also said the tests should be done by companies used by major sports leagues, like Major League Baseball and the NFL, something that so far is a major sticking point in the talks. Mayweather's camp wants the tests done by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which operates under much stricter rules that include random blood tests.

Arum accused Mayweather of trying to play mind games with Pacquiao, saying that the Filipino sensation has never failed urine tests for performance-enhancing substances.

"They want to put it in Manny's head that they can come in any time and take blood," Arum said. "Manny believes taking blood will weaken him. This is absolutely outrageous. Who does Floyd Mayweather think he is, the commissioner of boxing?"

Mayweather's promoter, Richard Schaefer, said he was willing to try and reach a consensus between the two sides. He cited comments by Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, that Pacquiao would agree to blood tests up to five days before the fight as possible middle ground.

"If we could agree to a 3-day cutoff I would try to sell that to my side," Schaefer said. "If Arum wants to walk away then he is going to be the one responsible for this fight falling apart."

Roach told The Associated Press on Tuesday night that he would not allow Pacquiao to be tested the day before the fight, but would agree to giving blood if there was a cutoff date.

"If they give me a 5-day window or something like that I have no problem with it," Roach said. "When they've drawn blood from Manny in the past he feels weaker for three or four days. It may be mental, but it's there."

The standoff over drug testing is the only issue still in the way of a fight that could be the richest ever. The two fighters earlier agreed to take equal purses, and earlier this week Mayweather's camp agreed to pay Pacquiao $10 million for each pound or fraction of a pound if the fighter does not make the 147-pound welterweight limit.

If the fight is held, it will be at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas. But with the magnitude of the fight's promotion and the need for the fighters to set up training schedules, there isn't a lot of time left to reach an agreement.

The demand by Mayweather for the USADA to administer an Olympic-style testing program for the two fighters beginning with the contract signing goes far beyond any testing done by the Nevada Athletic Commission. Boxers have their urine tested before and after fights and occasionally in training, but there are no blood tests for things like human growth hormone that can't be detected in urine.

Schaefer, who with former boxer Oscar De La Hoya runs Golden Boy Promotions, said that if Mayweather was trying to get out of the fight he would have walked when Pacquiao's camp demanded the $10 million weight clause in the contract. He said he didn't think 8 to 12 urine tests and 3 to 5 blood tests before a fight was unreasonable.

"Manny Pacquiao probably thinks it's going to be some nurse with a big needle sucking out a gallon of blood and leaving him lying on the floor for a week," Schaefer said.

Nothing could be further from the truth, said USADA executive director Travis Tygart, who promised that any testing his agency did would not affect the outcome of the fight.

"What we do and have been doing in no way impacts any athlete's ability to compete," Tygart said.

Cavs win fourth straight over 76ers, 108-101

PHILADELPHIA (AP)—LeBron James(notes) brought out Philly’s All-Stars, an MVP and a just-acquired Cy Young winner.

No one tops the King, however, in star power.

James gave Philly’s famous fans something to remember with a pair of clutch 3s in the fourth quarter, scoring 36 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 108-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

“I think we have a team now where we know who we are,” James said.

Phillies’ ace Roy Halladay, acquired earlier in the day from Toronto, watched from a suite. Phillies slugger Ryan Howard, Flyers goalie Ray Emery and forward Mike Richards, and Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson all had tickets.

James had another James-type night against one of the worst teams in the NBA. He went 12 for 26 from the floor, got hot in the fourth and silenced another road crowd that packed the place just to watch him play.

Mo Williams(notes) hit back-to-back shots in the fourth that gave the Cavaliers a lead they would never relinquish and scored 12 points.

Andre Iguodala(notes) led the Sixers with 26 points, and Thaddeus Young(notes) and Allen Iverson(notes) each had 16. The Sixers have lost 13 of 14 games.

Iverson had his left knee drained before the game for the second time this week and will have an MRI on Thursday.

“This one’s on me. I let us down tonight,” Iverson said. “I feel bad, that’s a game we should have won. We didn’t make shots at the time we needed to make shots.”

The crowd chanted “We Want A.I.!” with Iverson on the bench as the Sixers made a fourth-quarter charge that put them ahead against a team that has 13 more victories. Iguodala’s 3-pointer with 5:50 left stretched the lead to 94-90.

But James came right back and sank his own 3. He then matter-of-factly hit another one that made it 96-all

James dished to Williams for a long jumper that gave the Cavs a 98-96 lead. Iguodala, who takes all the big shots for the Sixers, missed a 3 and Williams capitalized with a 3-pointer for a 101-96 lead.

The 3s were the first two field goals of the game for Williams, who was averaging 16.7 points.

“That’s Mo,” James said. “I’ve got 150 percent trust in Mo.”

James stepped back for an 18-footer that all but sealed the win for the Cavaliers. They were coming off a 99-89 win over New Jersey on Tuesday night.

“LeBron James, being who he is, hit some big shots for us,” coach Mike Brown said.

Iverson, Iguodala and Young brought the Sixers back from an early 12-point hole to take the lead in the third quarter.

Iverson put them up for the first time on a 19-footer from the wing that made it 68-67. He had an assist on one of Philadelphia’s more dazzling plays of the season—a running alley-oop pass from beyond the 3-point arc to a soaring Iguodala for the dunk and a 74-72 lead.

Daniel Gibson(notes) quickly quieted, and seated, the roaring crowd of 19,517 with a 3-pointer for the lead. The Cavaliers led 83-80 at the end of the third.

“No team is under .500 when they play us,” James said. “Everybody plays well when they play against us.”

Halladay had earned the loudest ovation before the A.I.-A.I. alley-oop. He received a standing ovation when he was introduced, and smiled and waved to the fans from his suite.

Sixers forward Marreese Speights(notes) played for the first time since he tore the MCL in his left knee on Nov. 14. Speights showed no sign of injury when he leaped off the court for a one-handed dunk in the fourth that cut the hole to 87-84.

Sixers forward Elton Brand(notes) was benched for the second straight game, and might be permanently there. Coach Eddie Jordan wants the smaller, quicker backcourt of Iverson and Jrue Holiday(notes), and Young, Sam Dalembert and swingman Iguodala on the court.

Iguodala hurt his ribs in Monday’s win, but looked sharp against the Cavs.

Brand has not complained about his role, though he feels he should be a starter. His three-point play in the middle of the fourth tied the game at 89.

Jordan used Brand at center in the fourth quarter. Brand still played 33 minutes and had 14 points.

He didn’t sign a five-year deal in 2008 to ride the bench for a lousy team.

11 Winning Streak for Boston Celtics

9:25 PM, Posted by eilrach, No Comment

It was a very close game throughout, Boston holding its biggest lead at 103-95 after Rondo put a layup with 2:49 left. Memphis Grizzlies though answered with six straight points, included with a pair of baskets from Mayo to get within two with 1:29 left. However, Garnett’s 21-foot jumper from the top of the key stopped the rally, along with Ray Allen's 3-pointer which sealed the game as the shot clock was about to expired with 17.5 seconds left.

Officials reviewed Allen’s basket though to confirm that it was a 3-pointer, and did not step beyond the arc and also occurred before the shot clock run out.

Boston shot 53 percent on the night to Memphis’ 51 percent. The Celtics were 10 of 20 from beyond the arc, but the Grizzlies made only one of their 13 long-range shots.

Boston committed 12 turnovers compared to 10 for Memphis.

Paul Pierce(notes) scored 19 points, Ray Allen(notes) and Rajon Rondo(notes) added 18 apiece and the Boston Celtics won their 11th straight game, beating the Memphis Grizzlies 110-105 on Monday night.

Rasheed Wallace(notes) added 15 points, while Kendrick Perkins(notes) and Kevin Garnett(notes) each scored 13. Rondo had nine of Boston’s 25 assists.

Rudy Gay(notes) led the Grizzlies with 23 points and O.J. Mayo(notes) had 21. Zach Randolph(notes) added 20 for Memphis, which has lost two of three.

The Celtics were able to put some distance between them and the Grizzlies as Memphis appeared to tire late in the third. Allen connected on a 3-pointer with 1:41 left in the quarter, helping Boston carry an 85-81 lead into the fourth.

10 Game Winning Streak for Boston Celtics

5:24 AM, Posted by eilrach, No Comment

Rajon Rondo had 16 points and 14 assists, and the Celtics won their 10th straight, beating the struggling Chicago Bulls 106-80 on Saturday.

Rasheed Wallace and Eddie House scored 15 apiece. Kevin Garnett added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Pierce scored 14 even though he sustained a stinger on his right shoulder and hit just 4 of 12 shots.

The Celtics, who blew out the Bulls in October, look more like the team that won the championship than the one that struggled to get by Chicago last season, settling in after a volatile start.

Rondo said he expected some retribution from Miller, considering his hard foul late in Game 5 of the playoffs left him with a bloody mouth.
